A unique two-week summer programme blending English language learning with environmental awareness and outdoor adventure.

Students will begin their journey at Bell Badminton School in Bristol, before heading off-grid to spend three unforgettable days immersed in nature at The Bioasis, a 1,200-acre wild landscape in Devon. When they return to Bell Badminton, the course continues with special eco-themed English lessons, sustainability projects, and trips to explore local culture and nature.

Students will enjoy shared activities and social time with the wider Summer Explorer community, but follow a tailored curriculum with a strong focus on the environment.

Course overview

On this course, students will:

  • Gain confidence and become more independent learners and users of the English language
  • Develop their English language skills (reading writing, listening, and speaking) through real-world, sustainability-themed projects
  • Improve vocabulary, pronunciation, understanding of grammar and engage with environment related topics
  • Experience hands-on conservation tasks and outdoor challenges at The Bioasis
  • Explore UK culture through study tours with a focus on innovation and sustainability
  • Gain essential 21st century life skills (communication, critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and cultural awareness)

Bell Badminton School

Located in the vibrant city of Bristol, Bell Badminton School is a modern and welcoming student summer centre with outstanding facilities and a safe, residential campus.

The Bioasis

Students will spend three days in the wild beauty of The Bioasis in Devon: a stunning, off-grid basecamp in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This phone-free wilderness mission encourages resourcefulness, teamwork and connection with nature.

They’ll learn bushcraft skills, take part in conservation work and night navigation, track wildlife and canoe through salt marshes. Lessons in English will take place outdoors, surrounded by forest and sky, making this a truly unique learning environment.

Transfers, accommodation, meals and expert supervision are included.

Eco-focused English learning

Back at Bell Badminton School, students will dive into engaging eco-themed English lessons and collaborative projects. These include designing a sustainable camp, fieldwork at nature reserves, community rewilding visits, and creative challenges like eco-poster campaigns or recycled fashion shows.

All sessions are designed to support vocabulary development, spoken fluency, and creative thinking – with every learner encouraged to reflect on their role in shaping a sustainable future.

  • In addition to classroom learning, students will explore the UK through carefully chosen study tours. These include:

    Natural History Museum, London

    The Natural History Museum is one of the most iconic and fascinating museums in the world. Its stunning exhibitions explore everything from dinosaurs and volcanoes to climate science and biodiversity.

    Students will take part in a themed tour focusing on environmental change and the role of science in protecting our planet.

  • Hyde Park, London

    Hyde Park is one of London’s most famous green spaces, known for its open meadows, peaceful lakes and historic landmarks.

    Students will explore the park through an English language nature walk and complete activities like a themed bingo challenge, helping them build vocabulary while learning about British plants, bird and park life in a fun, relaxed setting.

  • Science Centre, Cardiff

    Techniquest is a hands-on science centre in Cardiff, offering interactive exhibits and workshops that make science exciting and accessible.

    Students will take part in a special session on climate change, helping them understand the impact of global warming and the importance of sustainability.

  • Cardiff Castle

    Cardiff Castle is one of Wales’ most famous landmarks. With over 2,000 years of history, it includes Roman walls, medieval towers and beautiful Victorian rooms.

    Students will explore the castle and learn more about British history, while taking parts in fun English language activities to build vocabulary and confidence.

  • Bristol Harbour & Eco-Sites

    Bristol is known for its vibrant creative scene and environmental projects. Students will visit places like the M Shed Museum and explore Bristol Harbour while learning about the city’s efforts to become more sustainable.

    They will take part in fun, language-based activities such as photo scavenger hunts and guided tasks, using English to explore themes of innovation, culture and community.

  • Local Rewilding Project

    Students will visit a community-based rewilding or permaculture site near Bristol, where they’ll learn how local people are restoring natural habitats and building greener futures.

    They’ll get involved in the day’s work, practise English through interviews and discussions, and reflect on what they can do to support the environment in their own lives.
